CRAZY LOGS

SKILL LEVEL AND TIME FRAME
Suitable for all levels
1 Day

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Experiment with template free variation of the log cabin design.  A small individual quilt of 16 blocks will be commenced in this one day workshop.  Explore the effects of combining a wide variety of fabrics that evolve around a central theme.  The process is simple and the result is an exciting individual quilt.

QUILT SIZE:  115cms (W) X 115cms(H)

REQUIREMENT LIST
Sewing machine in good working order, instruction book, and a spare needle. (Please check that you have packed the foot with the machine.)
Thread to match the medium value of the fabrics
Fabric scissors
Pins
Rotary cutter, mat and ruler
Square ruler. (30cms or 12 inch)
A small flannel sheet to be used as a design wall

FABRIC
100% cotton is advisable as it is easy to cut, sew, and holds a crisp fold, or, you may choose to use wool or flannel.

CENTRAL FABRIC
The central shape may be a theme. eg. animals, flowers, holidays, family, sports, pieced geometric shapes, solid fabric or a combination of the above and will require enough fabric of the theme shapes for 16 blocks.  The motif determines the size of the central shape but they usually work out to be about 7.5cms to 10cms (3 to 4ins).
This will usually be about a half of a metre of fabric.

SURROUNDING LOGS
Prints, plains, or a combination may be used that compliment the theme fabric. Have a variety to choose from and vary the print scale and the value of the fabrics.
You will require 15cms of 16 fabrics.

From each fabric cut 2 x 7.5cms (3ins) strips from selvage to selvage, (or simply cut in half lengthwise) before class as this will save valuable time.  If you wish to make a larger quilt by adding an extra round of logs on each block add another 7.5cms or 3 inches to the total amount of fabric required. i.e. 22.5cms of fabric cut into 3 x 7.5cms (3ins) strips.

A selection of scraps from the scrap bag are also suitable as some off the first logs sewn on are quite small. A wide variety of these add interest to your quilt.
