TOPSY TURVY HOUSES

Suitable for all levels.  Being comfortable with the rotary cutter is desirable.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
A fun workshop designed for free rotary cutting and machine piecing to create the image of Topsy Turvy houses. No drawing skills are necessary for this workshop. Instructions will be given for different types of windows, doors, chimneys and house facades.  Students may change the position of the buildings or introduce new ideas of their own.  Embellishments may be added such as people, animals, blinds, signage and curtains to enhance your design to create a unique quilt.
Several different versions of this quilt will be shown for inspiration.

REQUIREMENT LIST
Sewing machine in good working order with spare needles and the instruction book. (Please check that you have packed the foot with the machine.)
Thread suitable to the fabric you are using.
Rotary cutter and mat
Scissors, pins and usual sewing requirements.
A small flannel sheet to be used as a design wall
5 plastic bags.  These will be used to keep the cut fabric from each group tidy

FABRIC
Homespun, hand dyes and small scale prints work well with this design.  The fabrics for groups 1 to 5 are cut into 1, 1¼ , 1½  and 1¾ inch strips so if you have any scraps that fit into your colour scheme they may be substituted as part of your fabric requirements.
Choose 5 colours you think work well together.
These colours will be divided into:-
Group 1.  The bulk of the buildings
Group 2.  The sky and some buildings.
Group 3.  Some buildings, chimneys and roofs
Group 4.  Some building and chimneys
Group 5.  Some buildings
Each group will have 4 fabrics of different values, pattern or scale.

Groups 1, 2 and 3.
4 fat quarters or 4 x 25 cms from selvage to selvage for each group.

Group 4 and 5.
4 x 15 cms from selvage to selvage for each group.

30 cms from selvage to selvage of a darker fabric suitable for windows.

30cms from selvage to selvage of light fabric suitable for window sashes.
